Job portals, banks, colleges and government forms often ask for one PDF with several documents, or for a few pages out of a long file. Many online PDF tools ask you to upload your files to their servers, which is a risk when the file is an ID proof, a certificate or a contract. Gopafy's PDF tools work differently: they run in your browser, so your documents stay on your device.
This guide shows how to merge, split and create PDFs for free, what limits to expect and how to fix common problems.
How can a tool work without uploading your file?
When you open a tool, your browser downloads the page and a small PDF library. After that, the work of reading, rearranging and saving pages is done by your own device. The file you choose is read from your disk into the browser's memory, and the new PDF is created there and handed back to you as a download. Nothing is sent to our servers, and closing the page clears the files from memory.
The trade-off is that the browser has to hold everything in memory, so there are size limits, listed below.
Merge several PDFs into one
- Open Merge PDF and drag your PDF files in, or click Choose PDFs.
- Put the files in order with the up and down arrows. The merged file follows the list from top to bottom.
- If you only need some pages from a file, type them in its pages box, such as
1-3, 5. Leave it empty to use all pages. - Click Merge PDFs. The combined file downloads straight away.
You can add up to 30 files and 150 MB in total. Page ranges count from 1, 7- means page 7 to the end, and you can list pages in any order, for example 3, 1, 2.
Split a PDF or pull out pages
Split PDF has five modes:
- Extract pages keeps only the pages you choose, in one new PDF.
- Remove pages deletes the pages you choose and keeps the rest.
- Split by ranges makes a separate PDF for each range, such as 1-3, 4-6, 7.
- Split every N pages cuts the PDF into equal parts.
- One file per page saves every page as its own PDF.
A single result downloads at once. If the split makes several files, you can download them one by one or all together as a ZIP. The tool accepts one PDF of up to 150 MB and 2,000 pages, and a split can make up to 200 files. Your original file is never changed.
Turn photos and scans into a PDF
Phone photos of documents are often rejected by portals that want a PDF. Image to PDF turns JPG, PNG, WebP, GIF and BMP pictures into one PDF, one picture per page:
- Add up to 50 pictures (100 MB in total) and put them in order.
- Choose the page size (A4, US Letter, A5 or Legal), orientation, margin and quality.
- Click Create PDF to download it.
Choose Small file when the portal has a size limit, and High quality for printing. Pictures are saved as JPG inside the PDF, so transparent areas of a PNG become white.
Keep the file size under a portal's limit
- Compress large photos first with the image compressor, which can compress to a target size such as under 100 KB.
- Choose the Small file quality in Image to PDF.
- Extract only the pages you need instead of sending a whole document.
- Scan in good light, straight on, so you do not need a high resolution to keep the text readable.
Common problems and fixes
| Problem | What to do |
|---|---|
| "Password protected" message | Remove the password in the app that created the file, then add it again. |
| File "could not be read" | The PDF may be damaged. Re-save or re-export it from the original program. |
| Page out of range | Check how many pages the file has. The tool shows the page count next to each file. |
| Form fields missing in the result | Merging copies the visible pages, so fill in forms before merging if you need to keep your entries. |
| The browser slows down | Use fewer or smaller files, or do the job in two steps. |
Privacy tips for sensitive documents
- Use your own device, not a shared or public computer, for ID proofs and contracts.
- Delete the downloaded files when you no longer need them.
- Open the result and check it before sending, so the right pages are included and nothing extra is shared.
- Remember that a PDF can contain hidden information such as comments and metadata from its original program.
Frequently asked questions
Are my PDFs uploaded when I use these tools?
No. The merging, splitting and image conversion happen in your browser, on your own device. Your files are not sent to our servers. The page does download a small PDF library from a content delivery network so it can work, but your documents are never part of that download.
How do I merge PDF files in a specific order?
Add all the files, then use the up and down arrows beside each file to put them in order. The merged PDF follows the list from top to bottom. You can also type page numbers or ranges for any file, such as 1-3, 5, if you only want some of its pages.
How do I extract a few pages from a large PDF?
Open Split PDF, add the file and choose Extract pages. Type the pages you want, for example 2-4, 8, and click Split PDF. You get one new PDF with only those pages. Your original file is not changed, so you can try again with different pages.
Why can I not merge a password-protected PDF?
A PDF that needs a password to open cannot be read by the browser, so the tool skips it and tells you. Remove the password in the app that created the file, or ask the sender for an unlocked copy, and then add it again.
Will form fields and bookmarks survive merging?
They may not. Merging and splitting copy the visible pages, but interactive form fields, bookmarks and some links from the original may not be kept in the new file. Open the result and check it before you send it, especially for forms that someone else has to fill in.
What is the maximum file size I can use?
Merge PDF accepts up to 30 files and 150 MB in total. Split PDF accepts one PDF of up to 150 MB and 2,000 pages. Image to PDF accepts up to 50 images and 100 MB in total. These limits exist because the browser has to keep everything in memory on your device.
