Example deductions: ₹15,000 monthly rent in a metro (HRA exemption), the full ₹1.5 lakh under 80C (your employee PF counts towards it), ₹25,000 of health insurance and ₹50,000 in NPS. With these, the new regime still costs less for a ₹10 lakh CTC.
Assumptions behind these figures
- Basic pay is 40% of CTC, HRA is 50% of basic (metro), LTA is 5% of CTC, and gratuity is 4.81% of basic. Special allowance is the balance.
- Employee PF is 12% of basic, capped at the ₹15,000 wage ceiling (₹21,600 a year). Employer PF is the same amount.
- Professional tax is ₹2,400 a year. It differs by state and some states charge none.
- Rules as of FY 2026-27 (AY 2027-28), same slabs as FY 2025-26: new regime standard deduction ₹75,000, no tax up to ₹12 lakh taxable income, 4% cess. Surcharge, senior citizen slabs and capital gains are not included.
- Your payslip may be structured differently, so treat this as an estimate and confirm with your employer.
