How the SIP estimate works

Each month your instalment is invested at the start of the month and earns the expected monthly return, which is the annual return divided by 12. The calculator adds up every instalment month by month. A step-up raises the instalment by a fixed percentage each year.

Worked example

A SIP of ₹5,000 a month for 15 years at an assumed 12% a year invests ₹9 lakh and would be worth about ₹25.23 lakh. The 12% is only an assumption for the example. Actual returns vary and can be negative.

What a calculator cannot tell you

Market returns are not steady. A real SIP will move up and down, and your result depends on the fund, its charges and the period. Use the calculator to compare scenarios, such as 8%, 10% and 12%, not to predict a number.

Common mistakes

Treating an assumed return as a promise, ignoring taxes and fund charges, stopping a SIP when markets fall, and not increasing the SIP as income grows.

Frequently asked questions about the SIP Calculator

How is the SIP future value calculated?

Each monthly instalment is invested at the start of the month and grows at the expected monthly rate, which is the annual rate divided by 12. The calculator adds up all instalments month by month.

What return should I assume?

Nobody can promise a return. Use a conservative figure for planning, and try a lower and a higher rate to see the range. 12% is shown only as an example.

What is a step-up SIP?

A step-up SIP is a systematic investment plan where you raise the monthly instalment by a fixed percentage every year, for example 10%, as your income grows. Over a long period this builds a larger corpus than a flat SIP. Switch on the step-up option to see the difference.

SIP or lumpsum, which is better?

A SIP spreads purchases over time and suits regular income. A lumpsum puts all money to work at once. Which does better depends on market movement, which no calculator can predict.

Does it include tax, fund charges or inflation?

No. The result is a simple projection before tax, fund charges and inflation, using the return rate you enter. Real returns change from year to year, so treat the figure as an illustration of how regular investing compounds rather than a promise of what you will get.

Is this investment advice?

No. It is an educational calculator and not investment advice. Mutual fund investments are subject to market risk, and past returns do not guarantee future results. Read the scheme documents carefully, and speak to a qualified adviser before you invest.
