If you want to sell online, one early decision shapes your cost, your freedom and your daily work: use a ready platform such as Shopify, or build a custom online store. Neither is always right. This guide compares them for an Indian business, so you can choose with your eyes open.
What each one is
Shopify is a hosted store platform. You pay a monthly plan, pick a theme, add products and use apps to extend it. Shopify looks after the servers and the standard checkout.
A custom online store is built to your needs: its own design, checkout rules, admin area and integrations. You (or your developer) host it, and you decide how it works.
Where Shopify is a good choice
- Starting fast: you can open a standard store quickly.
- Standard selling: products, variants, discounts, carts and checkout are ready.
- Less technical work: hosting and the core platform are handled by Shopify.
- A large app store: many add-ons exist for marketing, reviews and shipping.
Where a custom store is a good choice
- Special pricing or rules: wholesale and retail prices, bulk rules, made-to-order items or quotes.
- Bookings or services with products: mixing orders with appointments or subscriptions.
- Deep integrations: connecting to your own stock system, accounting or delivery partners.
- Full control: of the experience, the data and how you grow, with no platform rules to work around.
The real cost: setup and running
Compare these over two or three years, not only the first invoice:
- Setup: a Shopify store is usually quicker and cheaper to launch. A custom store costs more to build.
- Monthly or yearly fees: Shopify charges for the plan, and apps often charge their own monthly fees. Check the current plans on the official Shopify pricing page, because they change.
- Payment fees: every payment gateway charges a fee per sale, on any platform.
- Care and updates: a custom store needs hosting and maintenance. See our guide to website maintenance.
- Changes later: adding something unusual may need a developer on either path.
Our website cost guide explains what makes a website project cost more or less. Gopafy website projects start from ₹30,000, and the price for a store depends on your products, checkout rules and integrations.
India-specific checks
- GST invoices: can the store create correct invoices with GSTIN and the right tax split? Our GST calculator helps you check the maths.
- Payments: does it support the payment methods your customers use, including UPI, cards and cash on delivery if you offer it?
- Shipping: can it connect to the courier partners you use and show delivery estimates by pincode?
- WhatsApp: many Indian buyers like to ask questions on WhatsApp. Our free WhatsApp link generator makes a click-to-chat link for your product pages.
Speed and photos
Slow product pages lose sales. Large photos are the usual reason. Compress them before you upload with the image compressor, and test your store with the free website health check.
Ownership of your data
Your products, customers and order history are your business. On any platform, ask how to export them, who owns the code and what happens if you leave. With a custom store, get ownership of the code and database written into the agreement.
A simple way to decide
- List what your store must do on day one, and what you expect in two years.
- If it is standard selling with a modest catalogue, a ready platform is worth a close look.
- If you have unusual pricing, bookings, wholesale or deep integrations, a custom store may save trouble later.
- Add up the two-year cost of each, including apps, fees and care.
- Ask each provider to show how GST invoices, UPI and shipping work.

Frequently asked questions
Is Shopify or a custom store better for an Indian business?
Shopify suits businesses that want to start selling quickly with standard features. A custom store suits businesses with special needs, such as unusual pricing, wholesale rules, bookings, deep integrations or full control of the design. Decide by what your store must do now and in the next two years.
What does Shopify cost to run?
Shopify charges a monthly plan, and you may also pay for paid apps, a theme and payment gateway fees. Prices change, so check the current plans on the official Shopify pricing page and add up the apps you will actually need.
What does a custom online store cost?
It costs more to build than a ready platform, and the price depends on the number of products, the checkout rules, payments, integrations and design. After launch you pay for hosting and care. Ask for a written quote based on your feature list.
Can a custom store handle GST invoices and Indian payments?
Yes, if it is built for them. A custom store can create GST invoices, work with Indian payment gateways and UPI, and connect to shipping partners. Ask the developer to show how each one works before you agree.
Do I own my store data with Shopify?
You can export products and customers from Shopify, but your store runs on their platform and under their terms. With a custom store, you can own the code and the database, if the agreement says so. Ask about data ownership and exports in either case.
Does Gopafy build online stores?
Yes. Gopafy builds online stores with checkout, payments and inventory management, and works with Shopify as well as custom technology. Website projects start from ₹30,000, and the price depends on your requirements.
