What a GST tax invoice must show

A tax invoice normally shows the supplier's name, address and GSTIN, a unique invoice number and date, the buyer's details (with GSTIN for a business customer), a description of each item with its HSN code for goods or SAC code for services, quantity, taxable value, the GST rate and the CGST, SGST or IGST amount, the place of supply, the total, and a signature or digital signature.

CGST and SGST or IGST

If you and your customer are in the same state, the tax is split into CGST and SGST. If they are in different states, it is charged as IGST. The generator picks the right one from the two states you enter.

HSN and SAC codes

The number of HSN digits you must show depends on your turnover and current notifications, so check the latest requirement. The generator does not decide your tax rate. Confirm the rate for each item in the official schedule.

Other documents

Composition-scheme dealers issue a bill of supply instead of a tax invoice and do not charge GST separately. A credit note corrects an invoice after the fact. Businesses above the e-invoicing turnover threshold must generate invoices through the government system, which this tool does not do.

Common mistakes

Reusing an invoice number, using a retired 12% or 28% rate on a new invoice, mixing CGST/SGST with IGST, and leaving out the buyer's GSTIN on a B2B invoice.

Frequently asked questions about the GST Invoice Generator

What is a GST Invoice?

A GST invoice is a bill issued by a registered seller to a buyer showing the detailed breakdown of the goods or services supplied and the GST tax charged on them.

When is CGST, SGST or IGST charged?

CGST & SGST are charged for intra-state sales (buyer and seller in the same state). IGST is charged as a single combined tax for inter-state sales (buyer and seller in different states).

Is HSN or SAC code mandatory on invoices?

Yes, HSN (for goods) or SAC (for services) is mandatory for B2B tax invoices per Indian Government rules, with varying digit lengths required based on turnover.

Are the invoices generated by this tool legally compliant?

Yes, our template includes all mandatory fields required by the Government of India for a standard tax invoice. Just ensure your provided info is accurate.

Is my business data saved on your servers?

No. The invoice is built entirely in your own browser window, so your seller details, customer details and line items are never sent to or stored on our servers. A draft is kept only in your browser, and you can clear it at any time.

How to save my invoice template for next time?

Click 'Save Draft' at the bottom of the tool. Your business details will be securely saved in your browser's local storage for your next session.

Does the invoice choose CGST/SGST or IGST automatically?

Yes. If the seller and the buyer are in the same state, the invoice splits the tax into CGST and SGST. If they are in different states, it charges IGST instead. You only need to pick the state for each party and the tool applies the right split.

Is my invoice data uploaded anywhere?

No. The PDF is generated in your browser. Use Save Draft if you want to keep your seller details on your own device.

Is this invoice legally valid?

It includes the fields a GST tax invoice normally needs, but you are responsible for correct details. Check with your accountant for your situation.

Can I use this for e-invoicing?

No. It makes a PDF invoice. Businesses above the e-invoicing threshold need to report invoices to the government portal through their accounting or billing software.

How do I number invoices?

Use a unique, consecutive series of up to 16 characters, and restart it each financial year if you wish. Never repeat a number, because every invoice needs its own. A simple pattern such as INV-2026-27/001 keeps invoices in order and easy to find later.
