Frequently Asked Questions
What is a cron expression?
A cron expression is a string of 5 fields (minute, hour, day-of-month, month, day-of-week) that defines a recurring schedule for automated tasks on Unix/Linux systems.
What do the 5 cron fields mean?
The 5 fields are: 1) Minute (0–59), 2) Hour (0–23), 3) Day of month (1–31), 4) Month (1–12), 5) Day of week (0–7, where 0 and 7 are Sunday).
What does */5 * * * * mean?
*/5 * * * * runs every 5 minutes. The */5 means every 5th minute. The remaining * fields mean every hour, every day, every month, and every day of the week.
Can I use this for GitHub Actions?
Yes. GitHub Actions uses standard 5-field cron syntax in the schedule trigger. Note: GitHub Actions times are in UTC.
What is the difference between 0 and 7 for day of week?
Both 0 and 7 represent Sunday in standard cron. Monday is 1, Tuesday is 2, ..., Saturday is 6.
