  3. Read the result and the formula used.

Why conversions differ

A CGPA is an average of grade points on a 10-point scale, while a percentage is marks out of 100. Because grades cover ranges of marks, boards use a multiplier to estimate the percentage, and different boards choose different multipliers.

Worked examples

With the CBSE rule of 9.5, a CGPA of 8.0 is 76%. With a plain ×10 rule it is 80%. A university that uses 7.1 × CGPA + 11 would give 67.8%. The same CGPA can give different percentages, which is why you must use your own board's rule.

Common mistakes

Using the CBSE multiplier for a university that has its own formula, entering a CGPA out of 4 into a 10-point calculator, and quoting a converted percentage as official.

Frequently asked questions about the CGPA to Percentage Calculator

How do I convert CGPA to percentage for CBSE?

Multiply the CGPA by 9.5. For example, a CGPA of 8 gives 76%. This is the CBSE method, and the calculator uses it by default. Other universities use their own formulas, so you can enter your own multiplier if yours is different.

Is there one formula for every university?

No. Some use CGPA × 10, others use their own formula, and a few have a different one for each faculty. Use the rule printed on your marksheet or in the official notice.

How do I convert percentage back to CGPA?

Divide the percentage by the multiplier, which for CBSE is 9.5. For example, 76% divided by 9.5 gives a CGPA of 8. Use the percentage-to-CGPA direction in the calculator, and change the multiplier if your university uses a different one.

What if my university uses a formula with an addition or subtraction?

Choose "My university's formula" and enter the multiplier, then the number to add. Use a negative number if the formula subtracts. This lets you follow formulas such as CGPA × 10 − 7.5 exactly as your university publishes them.

Why is the result capped at 100%?

A percentage cannot go above 100, so if a formula would give a higher figure, the calculator limits the result to 100. This prevents impossible results when a high CGPA is run through a formula that adds to the multiplied value.

Is this valid for admissions or jobs?

It is a calculator, not a certificate. Employers and institutions may ask for the official conversion from your board or university, and their figure is the one that counts. Use this tool to get a quick estimate before you apply.
